What exactly are enzymes? Enzymes are the proteins produced by living organisms and are composed of amino acids.
Enzymes are formed by stringing together long chains of amino acids, which have literally millions of different structures.
Enzymes are catalysts that create many essential biochemical reactions. These enzymes are not consumed in the daily processes of the body. However, if you are taking ibuprofen, Tylenol, or an antibiotic; if you are receiving chemotherapy or radiation therapy; or if you are cooking your food in a microwave, you are destroying your enzymes, and the enzymes cannot build or develop in your system. Without the enzymes, some metabolic processes would happen very slowly or not at all.
Our body has many different kinds of enzymes, but the three major ones are digestive, food, and metabolic.
Each enzyme has a specific blueprint and function. Every daily biochemical function of the body requires enzymes to facilitate the building of compounds from the body’s raw materials, the unlocking of nutrients, and the breaking down of substances such as food, toxins, and chemical wastes in the body. Therefore, when enzymes are disrupted, they lose their ability to function.
HORMONES AND ENZYMES
Hormones keep us young and energetic. But remember, your body must have enzymes in order to create hormones.
Enzymes are natural chemical compounds that orchestrate other chemical functions. Foods are made of chemical elements that require enzymes to break them down and prepare them to be used by the body. Enzymes unlock these life-supporting nutrients in our food. Without enzymes, life would cease to exist.
Enzymes play a major role in every metabolic process in the body, from glandular function and support to hormone production and toxic waste disposal. They facilitate digestion and assimilation. Enzymes are in all raw food products; carrots are especially high in natural enzymes.
Enzymes need minerals and vitamins to function, and they free minerals, vitamins, proteins, and hormones to be used in metabolic functions.
This is so critical. How many of you women have hormone deficiencies and know it? Hundreds. How many of you suspect you do? And you are right. Why? Your body cannot create hormones without enzymes. Hormones are made in a series of steps, and each step requires enzymes. Why are we hormone deficient? It may be that we don’t have enough enzymes. Can we change life? Can we maintain longevity? Absolutely.
Aging is not a requirement for diminished hormones. The higher the level of hormones you can maintain, the greater longevity you will have, the greater flexibility you will have in your joints and muscles, the greater strength you will have, and the more elasticity you will have in your ligaments. Then when you are 60 plus years old, you will be able to do the things you did when you were 30 years old.
So how does that happen? It’s called discipline. It’s called commitment—to a purpose, the purpose of your good health, eating habits, and what you supplement with.
ENZYMES AND GOOD GUT HEALTH
The upper stomach is alkaline, with a pH of 6.5–7, and food remains there for one hour and then enters the lower stomach, which is acid, with a pH of 2.5–5. This is really critical in helping to maintain good pH in the stomach. How do you do that? Two things are really critical: enzymes, No. 1, and probiotics, intestinal flora, No. 2.
So you have to have intestinal flora and enzymes to maintain a good pH range in the gut. If you don’t, what is the end result of not having good pH? Burping, gas, excessive acid, bloating, headache, stomachache—all those wonderful things that we sometimes experience.
Supplemental enzymes come from plant, microbial, fermentation, and animal sources. A lot of you may be vegetarians, and I just wish for you to pay close attention, because I feel that I can speak your language quite well. I was a strict vegetarian for 27 years. I lived that life and felt it was really valuable—except for one thing: not enough enzymes.
When you’re young in your 20s, 30s, and 40s, it’s really easy to be a vegetarian. When you hit 40, however, things start to change a bit. All of a sudden—particularly for you ladies who have had children—you start to notice that your energy is down, and your skin doesn’t feel as soft and firm as it used to. You start to get little lines around your eyes but feel that you shouldn’t.
Estrogen is needed to maintain beautiful skin for you ladies, and when you’re a vegetarian, you have a very difficult time maintaining proper estrogen levels after the age of 40 if you have had children. Now if you haven’t had children, you can probably make it to 50 before you really start noticing it, but in today’s world, I really doubt it.
For you men, it’s not any different, but it takes a little longer for us to notice the effects, since we’re not having babies and the alterations to our bodies that take place in women’s bodies. So a man might get to 50 before he can’t run quite as fast, can’t jump quite as high, or can’t bench press quite as much. Why? Because his testosterone levels are low. If he’s having problems as a married man, that might be an indicator to him. Testosterone. That’s what allows a man to run fast, jump high, bench press, and do the things he did when he was 20.
So what can we do to help our bodies produce hormones? Replenish our enzyme reserve, including animal enzymes.
Plant enzymes work in the higher (alkaline) pH of the upper stomach and continue to be active throughout the acid of the lower stomach. Then they pass into the small intestine, which is alkaline, after which they reactivate and continue to work.
YOUNG LIVING ENZYME SUPPLEMENTS
This is why I’ve made several different enzyme supplements for you. You have Allerzyme, Detoxzyme, Lipozyme, Fiberzyme, Polyzyme, Carbozyme, and Essentialzyme. You’re just plumb “-zymed” up. I wanted to make it simple for you, so I did a little thing that might be fun with Essentialzymes-4™ that you can put in your pocket or purse. Four enzymes come in a two-capsule blister pack, so you can easily take your enzymes wherever you would like to go.
Essentialzymes-4 capsules are two different colors. In this pack there are natural or cream-colored capsules and yellow capsules.
The natural-colored capsules are animal and plant enzymes and contain lipase. What does lipase do? It digests fat—and it does not come in a plant enzyme. Vegetarians who don’t take or eat any animal product do not get lipase. So what happens when their storage reserve of lipase that they’re born with is used up, and they’re a vegetarian? It’s gone. You have to supplement with lipase if you’re a vegetarian, and if you’re a vegetarian and you don’t want to use an animal product, you’re in trouble.
Because proteins and carbohydrates have 4 calories per gram while fat has 9, the fat-free diet came out in the 60s and continued evolving into the 80s. And what happened? The fat-free diet was promoted all over television, all over the world, and people’s hormones dropped even more because they didn’t have fat with which to make hormones.
Yes, you have to have fat, but the right kind, and you’ve got to be able to convert it into a usable form. So the natural-colored capsule is lipase, an animal and oil enzyme, your old Lipozyme. Really simple.
Plant enzymes have a wider range of activity than animal enzymes because there are so many of them, including protease, lipase, amylase, glucoamylase, alpha-galactosidase, cellulase, hemicellulose, invertase, malt diastase, lactase, pectinase, and phytase. Wow, that’s a mouthful of “-ases.”
The plant enzymes—which are in your yellow capsule of Essentialzymes-4—contain what we used to provide separately as Fiberzyme, Polyzyme, and Carbozyme, which are so essential for you.
Why is Fiberzyme important? People today do not digest fiber, and fiber is the host to candida, bacteria, and viruses. I have yet in 30 years to see a single client with candida who was able to digest fiber.
Polyzyme contains protease to maximize protein digestion. It facilitates the breakdown of proteins into amino acids, supports the digestion of high-fat foods such as nuts, and enhances the absorption of nutrients.
Carbozyme contains amylase for digesting carbohydrates. The absence of amylase is the No. 1 cause of allergies today, so look at that and look at your past. Were you a child that maybe was nursed for a couple of months, and Mama ran out of milk, so she had to put you on formula? If that’s the case, you did not get enough amylase to build up the reserve in the body to be able to digest carbohydrates. So what are you allergic to? Carbohydrates. All of this just builds the stage for having a wide range of health problems, including allergies and gluten intolerance.
All of these enzymes are now in your Essentialzymes-4.
Now, why are you so sensitive to gluten? Part of it is because all of the gluten products today are made from hybrid grains that have no enzymes. If you don’t have the enzymes, the product you are eating doesn’t have enzymes, so what’s going to digest it? Nothing. It’s going to create fermentation and may create a host environment for candida, bacteria, or a pathogen that leads to a disease. You are going to have problems and complications.

Remove and cool completely. Strain the syrup into a bowl, pressing the juice out of the berries with a wooden spoon and discarding the whole spices. Whisk in the raw honey and pour into jars.
For health maintenance, enjoy 1 tablespoon per day. For assistance in recovering from a cold or flu, enjoy 1 tablespoon 3 times per day.

In today’s world it’s common for people to be concerned they’re not getting enough vitamin D or probiotics, but the nutrients that should be getting the most attention for supplementation are the right kinds of zinc and B12. It’s these two nutrients that people are most commonly deficient in and that pose the greatest threats to our health when we are deficient.
In this article, I will explain why almost everyone is deficient in zinc and why it’s so critical to include–not only for chronic illness but also for health maintenance and future illness prevention.
Essential For Everyone
With a severe zinc deficiency, you can become gravely ill. Zinc is critical for liver health, autoimmune conditions, acne, adrenal problems, arthritis, cancer, eczema, psoriasis, brain fog, child and baby liver (the name I have given to a certain set of health challenges many babies and children suffer with–read more in Liver Rescue), diabetes, fatigue, mood struggles, gout, heart palpitations, hepatitis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, hot flashes, inflammation, migraines, SIBO, sinus infections, weight issues, vertigo, tinnitus, multiple sclerosis, lupus, Lyme disease, thyroid problems, Epstein-Barr virus, shingles, UTIs, candida, and every other symptom and condition that exists. If you have a symptom of any kind or you wish to help prevent symptoms in the future, it’s time to make zinc your best friend.
Viruses are the most common cause of all kinds of chronic illnesses and conditions. The body uses up supplies and even deep reserves of zinc at a rapid rate. It’s very common to become zinc-deficient when you have a virus, which most people do, if you weren’t already deficient. Zinc kills viral cells and lowers inflammatory reactions to neurotoxins produced by viruses in the herpes family, including EBV, shingles, and more.
Your Liver’s Ally
In Liver Rescue I share how integral zinc is for your liver’s health and proper functioning. “Zinc (as liquid zinc sulfate) is responsible for all of the over 2,000 chemical functions of the liver, including the creation of your liver in the womb and the development of your liver as you grew and reached adulthood.
The liver stores an abundance of zinc because it knows people are zinc deficient, in part due to the lack of it in the food we eat. Without zinc, your liver can’t perform its functions that protect your whole body, so despite its zinc storage, your liver always needs more, because the zinc output needed to respond to the mental and physical demands upon us is high. The onslaught of viruses, bacteria, and other pathogens in particular drains our zinc reserves.
One specific purpose of zinc reserves is to eliminate toxic forms of copper that are always high inside the liver and that can cause the organ harm. If someone is so zinc-deficient that even the liver’s zinc reserves have dropped to a dangerous level, that person can develop a host of viral related autoimmune diseases and illnesses, which you can read about throughout the Medical Medium book series. Zinc helps the liver’s immune system fend off every unfriendly microorganism that enters the liver.”
Critical For Thyroid Health
Do you or does someone you know have a thyroid condition such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Graves’ disease, hypothyroidism, thyroid cancer, nodules, cysts, or tumors? Zinc is critical for all thyroid conditions because it kills the virus that medical science and research don’t yet know is responsible for thyroid problems: Epstein-Barr virus. Zinc, as liquid zinc sulfate, helps protect the thyroid from becoming inflamed from the virus, along with reducing the growth of nodules, tumors, and cysts (both cancerous and benign). In addition, nascent iodine, which is critical for anyone with thyroid problems because it’s an antiseptic to viruses and other pathogens, is brought to life by zinc so it can work as well as possible.
Cold & Flu Support – Zinc Shock Therapy
If you feel like you might have a cold or flu developing, you can use a healing practice I call “zinc shock therapy.” It’s important to begin it as soon as you get your first sign of a flu developing, so having a bottle of high-quality liquid zinc sulfate on hand at all times is important. Squirt two dropperfuls of the zinc into your throat, let it sit there for a minute and then swallow the zinc. Three hours later, squirt another two dropperfuls into your throat and let it sit there again for a minute before swallowing. Repeat every three waking hours for two days.
Zinc Deficiency is a Trigger for Illness
If you allow yourself to become zinc deficient or you’re born into this world with a zinc deficiency, which is very possible because we inherit deficiencies from our family line, it gives viruses a perfect opportunity to take advantage of a weakened immune system and prosper. Multitude of Healing Benefits
Some other reasons zinc is so important include:
* Liquid zinc sulfate gives a major boost to the immune system by strengthening white blood cells such as lymphocytes, basophils, neutrophils, eosinophils, macrophages, and monocytes.
* Supports the pancreas and adrenal glands and helps stabilize glucose levels in the blood.
* Fortifies the endocrine system—including the adrenal glands, thyroid, and thalamus—which in turn supports neurotransmitters.

Foods Rich In Zinc
There are some foods that are especially high in zinc and are very helpful to have in your diet regularly, including sprouts, microgreens, collard greens, pumpkin seeds, radishes, artichokes, nettle leaf, parsley, onions, and raw honey. However, it is also important to consider supplementing with the right kind of zinc: liquid zinc sulfate.
The foods available to us on this earth don’t contain enough zinc anymore to provide all the zinc we need. Even the best organic farms tend to be missing this mineral from their soil, in part due to the elevated levels of toxic heavy metals that fall from the sky, altering the pH balance of the soil, depleting soil-borne microorganisms, and reacting negatively with the soil’s trace minerals such as zinc. This means that while pumpkin seeds, for example, which are celebrated for their zinc content, can be supportive, along with other foods known to be high in zinc, if you’re dealing with a symptom or condition, then supplementing with high-quality, liquid zinc sulfate will offer you an important immune boost.
More on Zinc Sulfate
Zinc comes in different forms and which form you supplement with matters. They’re not all going to offer you same benefits. Zinc sulfate is special in how it supports health. Also, as with all supplements, many products include added ingredients that are not health supporting, so it’s important to choose one that is as clean as possible. Avoid the many liquid zinc supplements that are loaded with citric acid, natural flavors, alcohol, and other toxic ingredients. Eating plenty of zinc-rich foods and supplementing with zinc sulfate (at normal levels, not in megadoses) can offer so much relief for the person who suffers from chronic illness.
Zinc and Copper
As I share in Thyroid Healing, there’s a fear out there that taking supplemental zinc will deplete all the copper in your body. Don’t let this misconception hold you back. When you take the right type of zinc supplement, which is liquid zinc sulfate, you don’t need to worry about copper loss. This zinc doesn’t remove the essential trace mineral copper that’s helping your health; it only removes any toxic copper—and there’s a huge difference between those two. In fact, even with a lesser zinc supplement, you wouldn’t have to worry about copper loss, because trace mineral copper is one of the most assimilable and available from everyday food sources, so we’re all high in it, able to recoup it quickly, and not at risk for becoming deficient. It’s also very common to be high in toxic copper, so if the lesser zinc supplement is cleansing you of it, it’s doing you a favor. Of course, it’s still best to go with high-quality, preservative-free, liquid zinc sulfate.

“If you’re concerned about your health—if you have any sensitivities or conditions, if you’ve struggled with illness, or if you’re just concerned about prevention—then it’s critical to avoid as many triggers and instigators as possible, and this includes certain foods and ingredients. Your body needs every possible level of support so it can heal and then maintain optimal health.
By now, we’ve all heard of preservatives and artificial flavors—we know to avoid those, for very good reason. There are other problematic ingredients, though, which you should know to avoid. These ingredients can feed existing viral, bacterial, and fungal conditions, which can lead to inflammation—and can also wreak havoc with your digestive system, weaken and confuse your immune system, strain your glands and organs, hinder cells anywhere in your body, disrupt or destroy your brain’s neurons and neurotransmitters, make you anxious and/or depressed, set you up for strokes or heart attacks, and more. Health professionals are unlikely to warn you about most of these foods and additives, because it’s not common knowledge that they can substantially worsen already-existing illnesses, nor that they can trigger new health conditions. You deserve to have full knowledge of what you consume, and what effects it all has on your body.
Corn used to be one of the fundamental sources of nourishment on earth. Unfortunately, the technology of genetically modified organisms (GMO) has destroyed it as a viable food. Corn products and byproducts create substantial inflammation. It’s a food that can feed viruses, bacteria, mold, and fungus. Even if you see corn advertised as being non-GMO, the chances are high that it can still trigger any kind of health condition—and that it may still be GMO.
Try to avoid all corn and all products that have corn as an ingredient. These include foods such as corn chips, taco shells, popcorn, corn cereal, and anything that clearly incorporates corn syrup or corn oil. They also include less obvious products, such as soda, gum, high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), toothpaste, gluten-free foods that use corn in place of wheat, and herbal tinctures that employ alcohol as a preservative. (It’s most likely corn grain alcohol. Buy the alcohol free versions of tinctures instead.) Try to read ingredient labels carefully and do the best you can. Staying away from corn products and byproducts can be a lot of work. For a treat in the summertime, it’s okay to enjoy a fresh, organic corn on the cob. For the sake of your health, it’s worth the effort of cutting out corn the rest of the time.
Soy has suffered a similar GMO fate as corn. Soy used to be a healthy food. However, you can now assume that any soy product you encounter could have some GMO contamination or contain added MSG. Be cautious when eating soybeans, edamame, miso, soymilk, soy nuts, soy sauce, textured vegetable protein (TVP), soy protein powder, artificial meat products made from soy, and much more. Try to stay away from soy the best you can. If you really enjoy soy and feel deprived without it, stick to the safest options: plain, organic tofu or tempeh, or the highest-quality nama shoyu.
Canola oil is mostly GMO at this point in time. And regardless, canola oil creates a great deal of inflammation. It’s especially damaging to your digestive system, potentially scarring the linings of both your small and large intestines, and is a major cause of irritable bowel syndrome. Canola oil can feed viruses, bacteria, fungus, and mold. Beyond that, canola oil has an effect similar to battery acid on the inside of your arteries, creating significant vascular damage.
Canola oil is used in many restaurants and in thousands of products, often as a low-cost alternative to olive oil. Even reputable health food chains and restaurants use canola oil to keep prices down, sometimes advertising canola as a health food. Unfortunately, if canola oil is even a tiny part of an otherwise perfectly healthy dish of organic and all-natural ingredients, you should probably avoid that dish because of how destructive canola oil is. If you’re dealing with a mystery illness or a health condition, try to avoid canola oil at all costs.

So far, GMO beets are mostly reserved for making processed beet sugar. You should therefore avoid products that contain processed beet sugar, which feeds cancers, viruses, and bacteria. This is different from grating fresh, organic beets over your salad, or juicing fresh beets. If you stick to organic, most whole beets that you buy in the produce section at your local natural market or at the farmers’ market are safe to consume.
Humans have eaten eggs for thousands of years. They were once an amazing survival food for us to eat in areas of the planet where there were no other food options at certain times of year. That changed with the turn of the 20th century, though—when the autoimmune, viral, bacterial, and cancer epidemics began.
The average person eats over 350 eggs a year. That includes whole eggs and also all the foods with hidden egg ingredients. If you’re struggling with any illness, such as Lyme disease, lupus, chronic fatigue syndrome, migraines, or fibromyalgia, avoiding eggs can give your body the support it needs to get better. The biggest issue with eggs is that they’re a prime food for cancer and other cysts, fibroids, tumors, and nodules. Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), breast cancer, or other cysts and tumors should avoid eggs altogether. Also, if you’re trying to prevent cancer, fight an existing cancer, or avoid a cancer relapse, steer clear.
Removing eggs from your diet completely will give you a powerful fighting chance to reverse disease and heal. Eggs also cause inflammation and allergies; feed viruses, bacteria, yeast, mold, Candida and other fungus; and trigger edema in the lymphatic system. People who are diagnosed with Candida or mycotoxins are often told that eggs are a good, safe protein that will starve the Candida and mycotoxins. Nothing could be further from the truth. I know how popular eggs are. There’s a growing trend that promotes them as a major health food. Plus they’re delicious and fun to eat. If eggs were good for us in the current day and age, though, I’d be promoting them as such.
Milk, cheese, butter, cream, yogurt, and other such products contain a substantial amount of fat, which is a strain for your digestive system—and especially your liver—to process. Dairy contains lactose, and the combination of fat and sugar has negative effects on health, especially if you’re diabetic. Further, dairy fat in your bloodstream helps to breed viruses and bacteria. Dairy is also mucus producing, and a major cause of inflammation and allergies. Those are the issues that have always held true for dairy, even when it’s organic and free-range. And now, conventional, mainstream practice has made a problematic food into a toxic one by creating farm industry pressure to give hormones, antibiotics, GMO corn and soy, and gluten to cows, goats, and sheep. If you want a smooth healing process, it’s best not to eat dairy at all.
Avoid all forms of pork, including ham, bacon, processed pork products, lard, and so on. It’s difficult to heal any chronic illness while consuming any kind of pig product, due to these foods’ high fat content.
Farmed fish are often raised in small, enclosed spaces. This breeds algae, parasites, and other diseases—so the breeders often give the fish antibiotics and treat the water with toxic chemicals. This makes consuming farmed fish risky. The safest fish you can eat are wild ones, such as salmon, halibut, and haddock. No matter what type you select, beware of mercury— especially with larger fish such as swordfish and tuna.
Gluten is a protein found in many grains. The forms of gluten to which people are especially sensitive are in wheat, barley, rye, and spelt (a type of wheat). (When it comes to oats, be aware that growing and processing sometimes cross-contaminates them with grains that contain gluten. Oats can be a very good food for people who are less sensitive, though. Look for those that are labeled gluten-free.) Grains that contain gluten also contain multiple allergens and proteins that can trigger any condition. They create disruption and inflammation, especially in your intestinal tract and bowels. They also confuse your immune system—which is your primary defense against disease— and often trigger celiac disease, Crohn’s, and colitis. Eating these grains makes it very difficult for your body to heal. If you’d like to recover from your illness as quickly as possible, minimize grains of any kind.
Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a food additive that’s used in tens of thousands of products and restaurant dishes. MSG is a salt that occurs naturally in glutamic acid (a non-essential amino acid). But there’s nothing natural about the extreme damage it can do to you. MSG typically builds up in your brain, going deep into your brain tissue. It can then cause inflammation and swelling, kill thousands of your brain cells, disrupt electrical impulses, weaken neurotransmitters, burn out neurons, make you feel confused and anxious, and even lead to micro-strokes. It also weakens and injures your central nervous system. MSG is especially harmful if you have an illness that involves your brain or central nervous system. However, there are no circumstances under which it’s good for you. As a result, this is an additive you should always avoid. Because MSG is included in countless products, it’s essential to read food labels carefully. It’s also important to know what to look for. MSG is often “hidden” on labels because of its deservedly bad reputation. The following terms usually mean that MSG is an ingredient: glutamate, hydrolyzed, autolyzed, protease, carrageenan, maltodextrin, sodium caseinate, balsamic vinegar, barley malt, malt extract, yeast extract, brewer’s yeast, corn starch, wheat starch, modified food starch, gelatin, textured protein, whey protein, soy protein, soy sauce, broth, bouillon, stock, and seasoning.
Any ingredient with a name like natural flavoring is hidden MSG. Natural cherry flavor, natural orange flavor, natural lemon flavor, natural fruit flavor…they’re not just fruit extracts, and they’re not your friends. The same goes for smoke flavor, turkey flavor, beef flavor, natural peppermint flavor, natural maple flavor, natural chocolate flavor, Medical natural vanilla flavor, and all their “natural” and “flavor”-ful cousins. (Although pure vanilla extract is safe to use.) Each type of natural flavor potentially contains multiple biohazards and chemical compounds. Natural flavoring has slipped under the radar and been allowed into thousands of health food store products that are advertised as good, safe, and healthy for you and your children. Moms, take heed. Natural flavors are one of the newest and stealthiest now-you-see-it-now-you-don’t tricks for hiding MSG. Take care reading labels so you and your family can avoid this hidden ingredient.
Artificial flavors can represent any of thousands of chemicals that were birthed in a lab. Don’t take risks by consuming them. As much as possible, the best you can, stay away from chemical additives.
Most artificial sweeteners act as neurotoxins because they contain aspartame. This can disrupt your neurons and your central nervous system. Long-term, artificial sweeteners can cause neurological breakdowns and strokes in your brain. If you crave sweets, eat as much fruit as you like. Fruit fights disease and has powerful healing properties.
Compared to the other additives in this chapter, citric acid isn’t so bad. That said, it’s very irritating to the linings of the stomach and the intestinal tract, so it can create a lot of inflammation and discomfort if you’re sensitive to it. Citric acid (the additive) is not the same thing as naturally occurring acid in citrus. Try not to confuse the two. Citrus itself is a healing food. The isolated ingredient citric acid, however, is often corn derived. Especially if you’re experiencing any kind of stomach pain, keep an eye out for citric acid on ingredient labels and consider skipping foods that include it.”

In the medical world, shingles seems like an open-and-shut case. You’ve got a patient with the textbook rash, nerve pain on the side or back, and that’s all, folks.
